About Us
Taxpayers Australia is a not-for-profit organisation committed to a fairer and more transparent taxation system for every Australian taxpayer. Our aim is to provide individuals, small businesses and taxation practitioners with up-to-date, informative and above all understandable information about taxation – to ensure that we pay the right amount of tax, and not a cent more.
The Taxpayers Australia website, taxpayersassociation.com.au, provides relevant and easy-to-understand guidance on all areas of tax. A highly skilled and credentialed team of taxation experts ensures that every piece of information is authoritative and technically correct, and even services tax agents and professionals 'in the field' via a member-only helpline service.
As a community benefit organisation, we are independent and unaffiliated with any political or commercial groups, advertising or sponsoring organisations. We are a member-based organisation, and our loyalty is dedicated to our members.
Taxpayers Australia has been a trusted source of tax knowledge and expertise since 1919 – we are one of the original, if not the first, of such associations in the world – and after doing something for more than 92 years you tend to get very good at it. Our membership and subscriber base comprises individuals and small businesses as well as tax and superannuation professionals. Our plain English approach means that information is not obscured by heavy jargon or confusing academic language, while still ensuring that tax issues are comprehensively clarified.
Taxpayers Australia was a founding member of the 'World Taxpayers Associations' – a federation of similar associations across the globe – as well as the Asia Pacific Taxpayers Union. We share ideas and experiences with like-minded organisations throughout the world, and share a global drive to achieve fairer taxes, less financial waste, and accountable government.
Our history
In 1915, to help fund the military forces of World War I and to aid the war effort, the Australian government introduced a new tax. The government of the day pledged to eliminate the new tax at war's end.
Not long after Armistice Day, in April 1919, a group of businessmen formed an association with an objective of holding the government to its pledge, which it never did. The fact that the politicians reneged on their promise only spurred that small band on to continue campaigning for fairer taxes.
Other associations were formed in other states to further the good work of those original concerned citizens, and eventually six state organisations were operating under the auspices of the 'Australian Taxpayers Association'. On January 1, 2000, the organisation was restructured to form a single national body and adopted the name Taxpayers Australia Inc.
Today, Taxpayers Australia continues to promote a fairer and simpler tax system, with thousands of Australians relying on us for tax and superannuation information, tips, tools and more. We have maintained an independence from political and pressure group influence, and we will continue to represent the best interests of all our members.
