ABN Lookup All data available through ABN Lookup is sourced from the Australian Business Register. The site contains only the publicly available information provided by businesses when they register for an Australian business number. All new registrations and updates must first appear in the ABR before they can appear in the ABN Lookup web site.
Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) Provides individuals and agencies an independent review of a wide range of administrative decisions made by the Australian government and some non-government bodies. Presently it has jurisdiction under more than 400 enactments covering areas such as social security, taxation, veterans' entitlements, workers compensation, citizenship and immigration, civil aviation, customs, freedom of information and ASIO security assessments.
Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency Promotes high quality care and assists industry to improve service quality by identifying best practice, and providing information, education and training.
Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia A national, not for profit, non party political organisation that represents the interests of Australia's superannuation funds, their trustees and their members.
Attorney-General's Department Provides policy advice and services to the Commonwealth in the following main areas: administrative, constitutional, civil, family and international law, international crime cooperation, Indigenous legal justice, law reform, bankruptcy estate administration and regulation, Commonwealth courts and tribunals, legal aid, native title, national and international human rights issues, censorship, criminal law and law enforcement, national security, emergency management, some aspects of customs and border control.
AusIndustry Delivers a range of more than 30 programs - including innovation grants, tax and duty concessions; small business development, industry support and venture capital.
AusTender Provides centralised publication of Australian Government business opportunities, annual procurement plans, multi-use lists and contracts awarded.
Australasian Consumer Fraud Taskforce Comprises 19 government regulatory agencies and departments with responsibility for consumer protection regarding frauds and scams. The ACFT also has a range of community, non-government and private sector organisations as partners in the effort to increase the level of scam awareness in the community.
Australian Apprenticeships Combining training and employment, apprenticeships can lead to a nationally recognised qualification. Available to anyone of working age and do not require any entry qualifications. You can be a school-leaver, re-entering the workforce or simply wishing to change careers.
Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) High quality economic research, analysis and forecasts to enhance the competitiveness of Australia's agricultural, fishing, energy and minerals sectors. ABARE and the government's Bureau of Rural Sciences merged on July 1, 2010. The ABARE-BRS website provides services and advice previously offered from both sources, backed up by 'both science and economic analysis and advice'.
Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) The Bureau of Statistics collects and collates data, runs the national census and is the central statistical authority for the Australian Government.
Australian Business Register An extensive database of identity information provided by businesses when they register for an Australian business number (ABN). The ABR makes it easier for businesses and all levels of government to interact using this unique identifier. The ABR provides instant online access to ABN details and transactions. (Note: The ABR website says it only supports Internet Explorer or 'Netscape' browsers.)
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) The statutory authority responsible for ensuring compliance with the Trade Practices Act.
Australian Customs and Border Protection Service Customs manages the security and integrity of Australia's borders. It works closely with other government and international agencies, in particular the Australian Federal Police, the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and the Department of Defence.
Australian Electoral Commission To enrol to vote or to change your address, complete an electoral enrolment form. The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) maintains and updates the Commonwealth electoral roll. The electoral roll is a list of eligible citizens who are registered to vote in Australian elections. Also has an electorate search tool. You can use this search to work out which electorate you live in, see who your local member is, find your nearest polling place on election day and look at a profile and map of your electorate. Also you can check your own enrolment details.
Australian Industrial Relations Commission From 1 July 2009 many of the AIRC's functions were assumed by Fair Work Australia. The AIRC will continue for a limited time to complete outstanding matters – in particular, award modernisation.
Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) Provides independent audit assurance and advice to the Parliament, ministers and public sector entities.
Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) Responsible for prudential regulation of banks, life insurance companies, general insurance companies, superannuation funds, credit unions, building and friendly societies.
Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) Corporate, markets and financial services regulator. Keeps Australia's financial markets fair and transparent, and informs investors and consumers. The financial advice branch of ASIC is called MoneySmart, which offers free, independent guidance so you can make the best choices in financial products and services, in financial markets, and in Australian companies.
Australian Securities Exchange As one of the world's top 10 listed exchange groups, measured by its market capitalisation, ASX group was created through the merger of the Australian Stock Exchange and the Sydney Futures Exchange.
Australian Taxation Office (ATO) The Federal Government's main revenue collection agency. Manages the revenue systems that sustain social and economic policy, and fund services for Australians. Administers legislation for taxes, superannuation and excise (but not customs duty) and addresses broader issues affecting Australia's revenue systems, such as aggressive tax planning, persistent tax debtors, globalisation and the cash economy. The Tax Office also supports the delivery of community benefits, with roles in other areas such as private health insurance, family assistance and cross agency support.
Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) The authority that helps Australian companies get overseas business in selecting, entering and developing international markets. Austrade offers advice, market intelligence and support (including financial support through the Export Market Development Grant Scheme) to Australian businesses looking to develop international markets. Austrade also provides advice and guidance on overseas investment and joint venture opportunities, and helps put Australian businesses in contact with overseas investors.
Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) Australia's anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulator and specialist financial intelligence unit.
Business.gov.au Offers access to all the government information, transactions and services you need. It's a whole-of-government service providing essential information on planning, starting and running your business.
Centrelink Centrelink is an Australian government statutory agency that assists people to become self-sufficient and support those in need. Centrelink administers more than 140 different products and services on behalf of 25 government agencies.
Child Support Agency The role is to support separated parents to transfer child support payments for the benefit of their children.
Commonwealth Ombudsman The Commonwealth Ombudsman has wide powers to investigate complaints about the administrative actions and decisions of Australian Government agencies to see if they are wrong, unlawful or discriminatory. The Commonwealth Ombudsman is also the Defence Force Ombudsman, Immigration Ombudsman, Law Enforcement Ombudsman, Postal Industry Ombudsman, Taxation Ombudsman and ACT Ombudsman.
Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Covers agricultural, pastoral, fishing, food and forest industries; water, soils, and other natural resources; rural adjustment and drought issues; rural industries inspection and quarantine; primary industries research including economic research; commodity marketing, including export promotion and agribusiness; administration of international commodity agreements; administration of export controls on agricultural, fisheries and forestry industries products; food policy, processing and exports. Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy The department provides strategic advice and professional support across a wide range of policy areas including: broadcasting, online regulation, information and communications technology, telecommunications and post. The department also administers legislation, regulations, grants and incentives to industry and the wider community.
Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations DEEWR implements government policies and programs to provide education and training opportunities for all Australians, to increase employment participation and to ensure fair and productive workplaces.
Department of Health and Ageing Services for the aged, including carers; public health and medical research; health promotion and disease prevention; primary health care of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; pharmaceutical benefits; health benefits schemes; specific health services, including human quarantine; national drug abuse strategy; regulation of therapeutic goods; notification and assessment of industrial chemicals; gene technology regulation.
Department of Immigration and Citizenship The purpose of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) is building Australia's future through the well managed entry and settlement of people.
Department of Infrastructure and Transport Promotes, evaluates, plans and invests in infrastructure; fosters an efficient, sustainable, competitive, safe and secure transport system.
Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Strives to encourage the sustainable growth of the Australian economy by developing a national innovation system that drives knowledge creation, cutting-edge science and research, international competitiveness and greater productivity for Australian businesses.
Department of Veterans' Affairs Serves veterans, war widows and widowers, serving and former Defence Force members, eligible AFP members with overseas service, and dependants and carers. DVA provides compensation and income support entitlements, delivers health care and rehabilitation services.
Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency Through education, assists organisations to achieve equal opportunity for women. EOWA works with employers to improve equal opportunity outcomes for women in the workplace.
Fair Work Australia An independent body with power to carry out a range of functions relating to: the safety net of minimum wages and employment conditions; enterprise bargaining; industrial action; dispute resolution; termination of employment; and other workplace matters.
Family Assistance Office Giving Australian families better access to government services, such as paid parental leave, the baby bonus, child care benefit or family tax benefit. Instead of going to different agencies to get family assistance, families are able to get all their payments from just one place.
Federal Court of Australia The Federal Court of Australia is a national court that deals with over 120 federal acts of Parliament. It sits in all capital cities and elsewhere in Australia when necessary. The court has jurisdiction in relation to almost all civil matters arising under Australian federal law. The court is able to hear cases in relation to human rights, bankruptcy, native title, workplace relations, trade practices, intellectual property and consumer protection. It also has the power to review some Federal Government decisions in areas such as social security, immigration and taxation.
Financial Ombudsman Service Independently and impartially resolves disputes between consumers – including some small businesses – and participating financial services providers. Membership of the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) is open to any financial services provider carrying on business in Australia. The Insurance Ombudsman Service was merged with the Financial Industry Complaints Service (FICS) and the Banking and Financial Ombusman Service (BFSO) to form the national FOS on July 1, 2008. The FOS takes complaints on a wide range of financial services.
High Court of Australia Appeals from the Supreme Courts of the states and territories, from the Federal Court of Australia and from the Family Court of Australia, are heard pursuant to special leave to appeal. The High Court is also the final arbiter on constitutional questions.
Inland Revenue Department, New Zealand Government The taxation office of New Zealand, the IRD is responsible for collecting most of the revenue that the NZ Government needs to fund its programs. It also administers a number of social support programs.
Insolvency and Trustee Service, Australia The government agency responsible for the administration and regulation of the personal insolvency system in Australia. ITSA operates the bankruptcy registry, where debtors petitions are lodged, debt agreement proposals are processed and public records on insolvency are maintained.

MoneySmart Information and tips on budgeting, saving, investing, being in charge of your debt, superannuation, protecting your money, and how to get good advice. The Understanding Money website was created by the Financial Literacy Foundation. On July 1, 2008, the functions of the Foundation were transferred to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).
National Information Centre on Retirement Investments A free, independent, confidential service that aims to improve the level and quality of investment information provided to people with modest savings who are investing for retirement or facing redundancy.
Office of the Privacy Commissioner The Privacy Commissioner has responsibilities under the Privacy Act and other federal legislation to regulate the way agencies and organisations collect, use, store (to ensure accuracy and security of data records) and disclose people's personal information. Investigates complaints from the public about the misuse of their personal information.

SCAMwatch A website run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). SCAMwatch provides information to consumers and small businesses about how to recognise, avoid and report scams.
Social Security Appeals Tribunal The first level of external review of decisions made by Centrelink about social security, family assistance, education or training payments. The SSAT is also the first level of external review of most decisions made by the Child Support Agency.
Superannuation Complaints Tribunal An independent tribunal set up by the government to resolve most complaints that members, former members (or beneficiaries in relation to death benefits) have with their superannuation funds. The tribunal is also able to deal with complaints in relation to some other superannuation-related products, such as approved deposit funds, annuities provided by life companies, and retirement savings accounts.
